Groo is a most delightful, blundering idiot. He is probably the most of these I have ever read about. Before you think I am being rude toward the wonderful creation of legendary cartoonist Sergio Aragonés (best known for Groo and his decades-long contributions to Mad magazine) and writer Mark Evanier (best known for Groo and the animated series Garfield and Friends), he is beautifully described as such in a poem on the first page of the book, sung by a court jester. It is about the fundamental depth of Groo’s stupidity to the point where any ship he crews upon is, basically, cursed to sink. His ineptitude is so exemplary, it is to be feared over and above fierce attack from actual pirates.
