This excellent and artistic tarot deck from Lo Scarabeo is based upon the famous images for the comic series "Corto Maltese", created by Hugo Pratt. The graphic stories in the twelve album dealing with the adventures of Corto Maltese, a sea captain, take place in the early years of the 20th century. They take the readers through many countries and experiences, including meetings with well-known persons like Jack London and Ernest Hemingway, as well as with fictional characters like Merlin, the wizard. Corto Maltese is present in places, where history happens like in the centre of the Russian revolution and where Italian fascism began.
To honor this highlight in the history of graphic books, Lo Scarabeo has recently published "Corto Maltese Tarot", based on Hugo Pratt's drawings. All cards have illustrations depicting the world of the hero, Corto Maltese and the characters surrounding him, not least the women. Unfortunately - again - the accompanying "little white book" is not of much help to identify the characters and the stories where the illustrated persons appear. Instead we get the usual list of superficial interpretation keywords. Why go to such an effort to create a high quality tarot deck like this and then neglect to tell the necessary details about it? Lo Scarabeo may assume that everyone knows their Corto Maltese by heart, but they do not. Apart from this complaint, Corto Maltese Tarot is a real joy to look at with its bright water colors and its variety of splendid illustrations.
